Lyn and I went to the "cheap theatre" tonight to watch MAMA MIA. It wasn't the greatest movie ever, but I really enjoyed it. Lyn wasn't a huge fan of the flick. My major reason for liking it so much is my HUGE admiration for Meryl Streep. She is exactly our age, so it's been a real joy to be completely contemporary with her in her career. MM was especially fun because I'd never heard her sing before. Impressive!
I remember first seeing her in KRAMER VS. KRAMER and I was hooked for life. I truly believe there is no finer living actress on the planet today. With her, every role is unique. With her there is never a wasted gesture, facial expression, or blink of an eye. "Brilliant" doesn't begin to describe her resume of work. MAMA MIA was great fun for 90% of the show, but when Meryl sang the haunting "The Winner Takes It All," the fun was over, and the audience was allowed to witness genius in 4/4 time. WOW!!!! I want to buy the DVD just to watch her sing that song again and again. Nobody can handle a prop like Streep. Nobody can take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride like Streep. Love the woman! (Professional love!)
If you are a fan, you might find this biographical sketch as fascinating as I did. Lots of great trivia about her life--many insights!
In MAMA MIA!
Below are two videos of Meryl singing "The Winner Takes It All." The first is a brief clip from the film itself. (This is toward the end of the song...her singing voice is better earlier, but this is the part that shows her riveting acting, and her voice is more emotional here. Dynamite! Wish the whole song were available.) The second is the entire song from the sound track with various pictures/clips from Meryl's career embedded.

Loved the movie, love her. I thought it was "cute" until she sang that song and than I actually cried...how could I cry at such a "cutesy" movie but she tugged at my heart with that song. I went a second time and took Ashley and she LOVED the song "Dancing Queen"...so cool. But my favorite part was at the beginning when Ashley said "I'm confused Mommy..what is dot, dot, dot?" :)
I too love her! I think she's fabulous and I'd pay to watch her stand in a corner. Enjoyed Mama Mia too but could've done without all the men as far as singing ability. She, on the other hand, managed just fine.
Oh, Celeste...when Pierce Brosnan started singing my first thought was, "They've had the technology for voice-doubling for decades. Whey didn't they use it here????"
Standing in a corner. Yep, she'd do that well too. We'd never look at corners the same way again.
Have you seen the trailer for 'Proof'? I see another nomination this year for Meryl Streep!
